Gifts for Your Coworkers on Employee Appreciation Day

We do a lot in the workplace. Besides just our normal job duties, the whole team brings something special to the table. There’s the person that always fills up the water in the coffee machine and the other team member that empties the dishwasher without being asked. Then there are the people that organize the unofficial company-unsponsored happy hours for the team.

These people are the backbone of the organization and deserve all of the great things coming to them, especially the gifts you get them for Employee Appreciation Day on March 6th. That’s right! You don’t have to be the boss to share a little bit of love to the people that hold it down in the office. Here are a few ideas to share with your colleagues to show your appreciation for all that they do.

Colorful Caffeine Cups

For the person that goes out of their way to make sure that the single-cup coffeemaker always has water, they deserve a special, funny coffee mug to call their own. Nope, they’re not rummaging around the breakroom cabinet to find one because, as an overachiever, they’ve earned themselves an overachieving coffee mug. Whether you go for one that’s sassy, inspirational, or cute is up to you, but they’ll definitely love that you noticed the extra effort they put in for the good of the team.

After-Work Party Pouch

We all have that coworker that breaks the ice and asks what everyone’s already thinking: Happy hour? Yup, they sure are the unsung heroes of the office and know how to liven the place up on even the most Monday-est Mondays. That kind of party-loving attitude deserves a matching party pouch for their purse. You know, the one that can hold anything and keep all of their little things together for happy hour and wherever the night goes. Pouches are great for keeping things together if they’re the kind of over-prepared person with a purse full of everything they or their friends might need. Skip the designer labels—they’re cooler than that—and get them a colorful cute pencil pouch.

Fun Desk Organizer

For the person that always keeps everything moving ahead of schedule, show your appreciation with desk organizer tools. You have tons of choices, but you should check out some colorful desk sets with all of the office work essentials they need to keep killin’ it at their job. We’re talking Jotter Pens, pen cup, stapler, utility tray, and tape dispenser, all in one adorable package.

The Little Awkward Moments at Work Worth Celebrating

It doesn’t matter where you’re from, what you do for work, or what jokes you have on your funny coffee mugs, we all share similar awkward moments. They’re all around us, and even if you get a touch embarrassed, it’s nice to know that we all share the same kinds of moments.

Awkward moments show us that we’re all human, and to celebrate that connection, there’s National Awkward Moments Day on March 18th. How do you observe such an awkward holiday? Let it all go and laugh at yourself a little bit and see the humor in these moments.

The Sidewalk Dance

You’re on your way into the office on the sidewalk, and some stranger is approaching your direction walking in the same lane. What do you do? Of course, you don’t just stay the course and allow them to redirect around you. No, instead you turn to the left, then they do the same thing. Uh oh. Maybe try the right side? Now you’re both on a collision course, leading to the awkward sidewalk dance. We’ve all done it thousands of times, but sometimes sharing a little dance with a stranger is the best way to start the day if you let yourself laugh about it.

Accidental Athleisure

You’ve actually kept one of your resolutions, and you’re hitting the gym in the mornings before work. You’re super stoked to rock one of your new cute tote bags to the gym in the morning and have all of the essentials. You bust it in there, but when you go to get ready for work, you realize you left your heels at home. Uh oh. Thus, the accidental athleisure outfit is born, complete with everything business casual plus some hot pink running shoes. Don’t sweat it! Give it a hair flip and chalk it up to good fashion sense.

The (Not So) Private Desk Dance Party

Who doesn’t love passing the time on a Tuesday afternoon by having a little private dance break at their desk? No matter how much you fight it, when that one song comes on shuffle, you’re gonna bust a move, even just a small move. But in the middle of your little routine, you look at and realize Christine in accounting and Aaron from sales have been watching you the whole time. Awkward. But hey, good music moves people, and you only listen to great music, so you can’t help it! All you can do is invite them to join in.

Getting Caught Using Someone’s Creamer/Sauce/Dressing from the Fridge

We’ve all been there. The one day you decide, “Hey, I’m gonna try that small-batch hot sauce in the breakroom fridge that’s been there forever,” the sauce owner walks in and catches you sauce-handed. It’s not a huge deal, but it can be a little awkward. Laugh it off, apologize, and get official-official permission to give it a go. They probably don’t even care in the first place.

5 Great Reasons to Give Your Friend a “Just Because” Gift

Who doesn’t love getting gifts? You know the biggest problem? We only get gifts for birthdays, holidays, and a few other times during the year. For both giftees and gifters, that’s not nearly often enough! Giving gifts is a love language, and you gotta express it whenever you can. So, if you are looking for reasons to give your best bud a gift, here are a few times when a random gift is most definitely appreciated.
They Just Got a Promotion

It doesn’t matter what you do for work—a promotion is a huge deal. It’s also the perfect giftable occasion! With a new role at their work, your bestie definitely needs an upgrade to help them do their very best and crush it. If they work in an office, you should look into getting them a colorful desk set. The best desk sets will have everything they need to look like a boss, work like a boss, and feel like one too, complete with a matching stapler and tape dispenser.

They Had a Tough Week

All weeks are technically the same length, but it feels like some weeks just drag and never end. Combine that with work stress, and they’re definitely in need of a little pick me up. Gift them something you know they love like a happy hour date or a box of their favorite chocolates. Your gift could be that reward they needed to know that all their work is worth it, and they have you in their corner rooting them on the whole time.

They Moved Into a New Place

Moving is always exciting, no matter the occasion. Sure, lugging boxes around sucks, but once they’re all settled in, they’re going to be so excited to start their new chapter. You know what this calls for? The perfect housewarming gift! You have so many options, but you should look into some art prints that will make their house (or studio apartment) feel like a home. Or, you could opt for some fancy cocktail glasses for their fancy parties or weeknight binging their fave shows.

They Hit a Big Milestone

We all have different milestones in life worth celebrating. Maybe they finally pulled the trigger and signed up for a half marathon. Or maybe they got the courage to ask for a raise at work. Whatever it is, celebrate it with a gift! Big moments and announcements tend to happen out of the blue, and we’re at that age where our buds start having families and all that, so it doesn’t hurt to have baby cards on hand just in case.

They Never Stop Being Awesome

Sometimes the best gifts are the “just because” gifts. You don’t need a reason to gift something to your bestie, and it’s an awesome surprise that’ll cement you as the number-one friend if you aren’t already (sorry number two, try again next time).

Productivity Hacks to Get You Through the Start of the Year

The holidays are over, and it’s back to reality. While some people are over the moon about their resolutions and goals, the rest of us are just trying to survive. With no three-day weekend in sight and the holiday excitement over, the office can feel like no man’s land. How do you get it all back in gear? Is it too late to even start on your resolutions? What day is it? Hello, is anybody out there?

Getting back to the grind can be tough, so it’s time to break out some surefire productivity hacks. Here are a few to help you get your head back in the game and crush it in Q1.

Stay Tidy

Sure, it may not be spring yet, but why not get a jump-start on your spring cleaning? Having a neat and tidy desk can do wonders for your productivity and headspace. Don’t believe it? Maybe you’re one of those people who thinks sticky notes everywhere, a pile of empty kombucha bottles, and pens flung around is a sign of genius. While creative chaos has its merits, try actually organizing your desk and see how much easier it is to cross things off the to-do list. If you have a ton of stuff, shop for colorful desk sets that keep it all together, and maybe you’ll even feel like you have it together too.

Pump Up the Jams

Sometimes the only way to get through these first few days of the year is to dance them away. Those fancy new earbuds you got for Christmas? Put them to good use and crank up the tunes. Whether that means listening to your ‘get pumped’ gym playlist, lo-fi hip hop beats to study and chill to, or some guilty-pleasure pop songs, keep those earbuds in as long as it takes to crush your tasks for the day. Even if Marie from accounting has pictures of her cute dog to show you, Fido can wait until that spreadsheet is complete.

Treat Yo Self

During the holidays, our reward for all of the hard work was only a fewdays away. With that carrot at the end of the stick gone, it’s time for something new to look forward to. You’ve worked hard this year, and more than earned a little Friday evening shopping spree. Whether you’re shopping for cute bags or just want a new set of cocktail glasses, treat yo self—you deserve it.

One Day at a Time

At the end of the day, making it through these few rough weeks is all about taking it one day at a time. Sure, the big holiday rush is over, but it’s a new year with tons and tons of new opportunities. Plus, spring and summer will be here soon enough, which is something to look forward to in and of itself. Toss in a few happy hours and weekend getaways, and you’ll be back in action in no time.

How to Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day in the Office

Random Acts of Kindness Day is on February 17th—what do you have planned? Kindness makes the world go ‘round, and it’s the random acts of kindness that can mean the most. Even something small like holding the door for someone or complimenting them on how they ran a meeting can mean a lot. Although random acts of kindness shouldn’t be designated to just one day out of the year, now that you know that it’s an official holiday, you have no reason not to participate. Here are a few fun and easy ways to celebrate around the office.

Compliment a Good Parker

Parking can be hard. At least some people make it seem that way, so whenever we see someone fit into a tight spot like it was made for their car, it’s worth celebrating. You’ll often hear of people leaving nasty notes for bad parkers, but never does anyone leave a kind one. Do that instead, and bonus points if they parallel parked too!

Give a Random, Practical Gift

The holiday season might be over, but who says there’s only one season for gift-giving? Everyone loves getting a random gift, so on this day, gift something to a coworker that they can really use. There are tons of options out there, from funny coffee mugs to colorful desk sets and more. Whether you get the whole office donuts or just single out a colleague who could use a little pick-me-up, spread kindness through gifts.

Unload the Office Dishwasher

Ah, the office dishwasher. It’s a blessing when it’s empty, but when you see it’s full in the morning, you might put off that morning oatmeal for fear you’d be stuck emptying it. How about you be the person that does it today? It takes a couple of minutes, which allows you time to refocus and step away from your desk, plus you’ll be the hero of the office for the day.

Host a Coloring Break

Coloring is good for the mind. You don’t need to read a dense science study to know that sitting down to color between tasks is relaxing and can help give our brains a break before doing actual, real work. You’re not the only one who feels that way in your office, so why not host a mini coloring sesh in the break room over lunch? Pack your cute pencil pouch with all of the necessities, break out a couple of coloring books and go to town!

Take a Coworker Out to Lunch

Who doesn’t love free food? Buying someone lunch is one of the nicest things you can do around the office. It also gives you an excuse to skip the normal lunch in a pail and try something new. Pick whoever you want—your best bud, cubicle mate, or maybe someone you’d like to get to know better. Shoot them a message and spend the lunch hour socializing.

The Best Compliments to Give Someone on National Compliment Day

The new year is here, and what better way to close out the first month than spreading some feel-good vibes? There has to be some sort of scientific formula for the relationship between happiness and compliments, right? Maybe not, but until someone comes up with one, we have to assume that a good, genuine, heartwarming compliment has a ton of influence on a person’s confidence, self-esteem, and general happiness. Just think about those times someone gave you a compliment and it made your day—pretty extraordinary, right?

In fact, there’s an entire holiday on January 24th dedicated to giving compliments called National Compliment Day. Although you shouldn’t have to save all of your compliments for just one day of the year, here are some good ones to spread year-round. And if you don’t have a chance to say one of these compliments to a special person in person, write it out on cute stationery and send it to them!

“Your perspective is refreshing and necessary.”

It seems like everybody has a unique perspective on pretty much everything. It’s these points of view that help solve all of the world’s problems, no matter how big or small. From getting people on the moon to getting the office wi-fi to work, perspectives are everything. As such, it feels good to know that ours are valued and necessary for the team.

“If you were a box of crayons, you’d be the fancy one with the sharpener.”

Remember back in grade school, there were those big, name-brand boxes of crayons with basically every color under the rainbow and a sharpener to boot? Yeah, we all wanted one, and if you didn’t want one, it’s because you already had one. Tell your bud they’re the human version of that premium crayon cradle.

“You’re a real gift to the office.”

Gifts don’t always have to be funny coffee mugs or come with a bow on top. Sometimes the best gifts are jokes, smiles, and holding the door for someone carrying something. If you know someone that always makes the office shine when they walk in, even on the Monday-est Monday, tell them! It’ll make their day and make them feel appreciated.

“You make the best water cooler chit-chat.”

The water cooler, like the watering hole of the animal kingdom, is where we gather to chill, make a little chit-chat, and, of course, get some much-needed H2O. Making small talk at the water cooler is a lost art in our generation, but some people make that 60-second break so much more. If you have a favorite small-talk office bud, let them know!

“I can learn so much from you.”

We all like to think that we’re wise and should either write a blog or try stand-up. The truth is, not all of us are cut out for jokes about airline food, but we all have something to share with the world. For most, there’s no greater compliment than being told that they have valuable wisdom to offer, so spread this message on National Compliment Day or really any time they share something you find enlightening.

Gifts for the Organized Person in Your Life

The holiday season is finally here! As you’re running around looking for gifts, you’ll likely notice how your loved ones each fit into different categories. From your college friend who lived off ramen and now runs a food blog to your mom who lives for funny cat pics, we all have our thing.
Chances are you probably know someone who has it all together—almost to an annoying level. They have a list for everything, and everything always has to be just so to keep it on schedule. Even though it can be a joyful headache to travel with them, they keep the trip in line. This holiday season, here are a few fun, cute gifts to celebrate their dedication to organization.

All the Small Things

Earbuds, lip gloss, bobby pins—what do all of these have in common? They love to wander off just when we need them most. Lost in-between car seats. Lost at the bottom of a tote bag. Just plain lost everywhere—it can be a real vibe killer. Luckily, some genius way back when came up with the humble pencil pouch and crafty people have been putting a colorful spin on the cute pencil pouch ever since. Your loved ones can keep their traditional pencils in their new pouch—or throw in some candy and trinkets. Whatever it is, keeping track of their little stuff will be way easier.

Pencil Us In

Some of our friends are almost impossible to nail down for a happy hour. They’re doing big things, so we can’t blame them, but if you want to give them a not-so-subtle hint that bottomless mimosas are long overdue, get them a new planner. Life’s too short to be using blank, boring legal pads to keep track of things, so snag one with colorful patterns and pictures so they can plan their days in colorful style.

Down to Business

Time to get down to business. Every rock star needs a desk set to crush their day. Increase their productivity, and keep them from having to ask Nance in accounting for a stapler every other day, with a colorful desk filled with every tool they’ll need. Plus, it keeps everything organized, which will make their little itemized heart happy. Don’t go with just any desk set—browse around for some bright and envy-inspiring desk sets online.

One To-Do at a Time

Ah, the almighty to-do list. Is it ever checked off completely? Probably not, but this list that stays in limbo between “omg, I have so much to do” and “I could probably get one more thing done” basically runs some people’s lives. Your friend is always crushing her list. So much so, she could probably use a new notepad, detective style, for when she blows through her current one. Plus, with fun covers and bright pages, she’ll love to use it daily.

Secret Santa Gifts for the Coworker You Hardly Know

It’s that time of the year. You’re rushing around from store to store, crossing everyone off your holiday shopping list. Mom? Check. Your happy hour partner in crime? Check. Your S.O.? Check. Uh-oh, you forgot someone. Yup, it’s the person you drew in the office Secret Santa. Who are they again? What do they like? Should you just get a gift card?
You’re a great gift-giver, and you’re better than the cheesy coffee shop gift card. Although it can feel like the office Secret Santa is backing you into a corner—seemingly always picking the one coworker you know the least—with some creativity, you can still win! If you find yourself in this predicament, here are some surefire fantastic gift ideas.

Note-Taking (and Doodling) Essentials

Much of our writing time is spent with a keyboard, but there’s still something to be said for putting jotter pen to notepad and writing out your thoughts. Some people think the mind-hand connection helps us remember better, while others just love the feeling. Whatever the case, no self-respecting busy bee would be caught without a notepad and a pen. It doesn’t matter if they work in the accounting department or at the front desk, they’ll adore the cute stationery you picked up for them.

Who Doesn’t Love Totes?

Totes are perhaps the most versatile and all-around “got your back” bag out there. They come in clutch when we’re grocery shopping, lugging our meal prep containers into the office, or when we’re trying to smuggle snacks into the theater (we won’t tell). Simply put, everyone could use a new tote! Even if they have a million, what’s one more effortlessly portable, ultra-cute, patterned tote in the grand scheme of things? This is a big-win gift if you have no idea what to get them.

Their Very Own Mug

Every office has that one cupboard jam-packed with generic mugs. For the person with a bit of sass around the office, they definitely deserve their own equally sassy mug for their 8 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and every cup in between. Check out some funny coffee mugs that might go over well. If they’re known to be a little edgy, go bold. If not, just stick with one with an uplifting message to power them through the afternoon.

Art Print for Their Corporate Gallery

Is there anything worse than working in a cubicle? Probably working in a cubicle that’s seriously lacking in the art department. Those gray walls can be pretty daunting, but it’s a super simple fix! Check out art prints available from your favorite online shop. Get something to motivate them or just a pretty little flower that stands out against that gray textile backdrop. They’ll love the flair you helped add to their space.

How to Crush It on No Interruptions Day — or Really Any Busy Day at Work

We all have those unfocused days when we feel like we’re off our game—for some of us, it might even last all week. You know the day when you just can’t seem to get anything done even though you’re physically sitting in front of your computer and supposedly hard at work. It can be tough to get into gear some days, but that salary isn’t going to earn itself!
This is even truer towards the end of the year, when we have sporadic days off, and all that’s on our mind is surviving another family dinner. No Interruptions Day typically falls on the last real workday of the year, December 30, so you can close out the year with a bang. It’s a day dedicated to getting stuff done and managing the chaos that is the modern workplace.

Whether it’s the official day or you just want to focus up on the job before the new year, here are some easy tips.

Make a Real To-Do List

Some of us are perennial to-do listers and cross everything off with ease. For the rest of us, we make the novice mistake of putting a million things down at the start of the day and then barely getting through half of them.

Let’s get real for one day and make the list reasonable and achievable. Put the hardest things at the top and get them done first. The rest will follow after that, and with everything in the right order, you’ll make crushing the goals of the day look easy!

Identify Your Distractors

Before you can create a fix, you need to figure out how you’re getting off-task in the office. Everyone has their own distinct distractors, and they can be the bane of productivity in the workplace. Some we can’t control, like that chatty coworker, but others we can.

Maybe you get distracted because your desk is cluttered with old memos, receipts, candy wrappers, and other stuff. If so, it’s a super easy fix with desk sets that keep things neat and tidy. With everything in its rightful place, you can focus more on the task at hand and less on where your earbuds are.

Focus for Just Five Minutes

Sometimes just getting started can be the hardest part of being productive. It feels like you have to just dive in and you get overwhelmed all at once. You don’t have to feel that way if you take it one step at a time. Having a super productive day is all about building up momentum and getting little things done that lead up to one big achievement.

Don’t be scared—try plugging in and cranking it out for just five minutes. Whether you like listening to your workout playlist at your desk or enjoy the muffled hum of white noise, commit to plug in and jam out some solid work for five minutes. The rest will follow after that!

Treat Yourself

If you’re hardwired to expect a reward for everything you do, go ahead and promise a little after-work treat! Whether it’s happy hour with the buds or going shopping for new cute bags, make it worth it. Work comes first, of course, but the day will fly by if there’s a carrot (or margarita) at the end of the stick.

Positive Habits We Could All Pick Up

We all have our habits, some better than others. Whether it’s grabbing a piece of candy from the front desk when you walk into work or cleaning your workspace every evening, sometimes we don’t even realize we have them. But did you know that they’re a force to be reckoned with when you push them in the right direction? What habits could you pick up that could get you to your goals faster and make you happier? Here are a few that are worth giving a shot!

Replace Screens with Pages

Smartphones and computers are super cool, and most of us can’t even make it through the day or hold down a job without staring at a screen. The thing is, it’s not the best for our eyes, and we could all use a digital detox from time to time. Instead of scrolling social media before bed or binging yet another episode, try picking up that book you said you would finish months ago. Even just 20 minutes of unplugging every night is a step in the right direction. Plus, blue light from screens can keep you awake, so shutting the devices down at night could help improve your sleep. Win, win.

Keep in Touch with Friends

As we grow up, our relationships with friends we were once super tight with might start to drift. It’s nothing bad, and it happens to the best of us. Busy schedules and responsibilities can get in the way, but it’s on someone in the friendship to reach out. So why not you? Shoot your old bud a text or send them a cute card through snail mail and catch up.

Get Organized

Having a neat and tidy desk can go a long way toward being the boss you know you are. If you’re fumbling over sticky notes and old lunch receipts while you work, it might be time for a desk refresh. Find yourself some cute and colorful desk sets to keep all of your work stuff neat and tidy. It may even make it feel like you have it together, even on your most hectic days.

Laugh It Off

Work and life can be super stressful, but if we’re always walking around taking every little mistake or problem to heart, we’re just making it worse. It is true that our minds love to dig up that one cringey thing we said seven years ago in quiet moments, but we certainly don’t need any more ammunition to keep us awake. It’s good to learn to laugh at ourselves and learn to brush off the little stuff. The next time you feel like you’re stressing about something, stop for a second and look for the humor in the moment. It’s definitely there, and by giving yourself permission to brush it off, you’ll be in a new headspace and ready to tackle the next challenge.

Know When to Treat Yourself

There’s just something about that warm fuzzy feeling we get when we flex our consumer muscles and treat ourselves to something special. But often, we can feel guilty for doing it.

If the rent is current and your bills are paid, then you deserve to treat yourself. It can be something as small as a new cute pencil pouch or vanilla latte, but after doing all the awesome stuff you do, you’ve definitely earned it!

Help Your Favorite College Student Finish Strong with These ideas

It’s the final stretch of the fall semester and officially go time for your favorite student. Gone are the “I’ll make up for it on the next one” tests: the final projects and exams are quickly approaching. If you’re within arm’s reach of a student, give them a hug—they could use it.

If not, here are a few fun gifts and thoughtful things you can do to help them finish strong.

Fuel Them Up with Coffee

Learning, partying, and being broke pretty much go hand in hand with the college experience. So what’s that one thing that basically all college students could use a little more of? Coffee. It’s that magic liquid that powers them through the days, and if they can get it for free, even if it’s bad, they’ll take it.

You can treat them to a coffee date next time you’re in town, or look for alternative coffee-delivery methods. Shop around for funny coffee mugs online and include a gift card to their favorite local coffee shop. They’ll get a chuckle and that much-needed caffeine buzz for their next all-nighter.

A Complete Study Station

Every student has that area where they get stuff done. Maybe it’s a cozy chair, a quiet corner of the library, or a more traditional desk cluttered with coffee cups, jotter pens, and long-lost assignments. If your favorite student is a desk person, supply them with some organizational tools to make them feel like they have at least one thing pulled together and organized. Desk sets are simple yet thoughtful gifts, and your student will love having a place to keep all of their school essentials.

Clear the Slate with New Accessories

You might be surprised how something as simple as a new laptop sleeve can do a lot for our confidence. Anytime you upgrade your daily essentials, it puts a little pep in your step. As the fall semester comes to its end, your favorite student probably could use a clean slate, and upgrade, for Spring.

Whether you get them a new shirt, a new tote bag, or resupply them with fresh jotter pens, it reminds them that someone is in their corner rooting for them. Hopefully, your gift inspires them to get through finals week in successful style.

Promise a Shopping Spree

If the college student you have in mind is your own and you have a financial stake in the progress of their degree, how strongly they finish matters. (Thanks mom and dad!) If you feel they could use a little motivation or you need to “grease the wheels” a bit, consider bribing them with a shopping spree at the end of the semester. Even if you know they’ve got all of their schoolwork locked down, college is tough, so they deserve it at the end of a long semester.

Write Some Words of Encouragement

Words of encouragement go a long way, especially during the trying time known as finals week. Your favorite student is a rock star, and you know it, but they might forget from time to time. Stressful situations are imposter syndrome’s favorite time to strike! Pour your heart out or send them a cute little doodle of them walking across the graduation stage on some cute stationery to keep their eyes on the prize. Whatever you send, make it thoughtful and totally dorm room wall worthy, and they’ll have something to keep them going until the end of the semester.

How to Bring the Party to Your Work Desk

Who says work shouldn’t be a party? Sure, most of us don’t love trading our days for money, but work isn’t all that bad. Hopefully, you do something you love, and the drag to Friday isn’t unbearable. Maybe you’re even one of those people who loves Monday mornings!

Either way, if you’re stuck staring at gray cubicle walls all day, it’s time to add some glam to your workspace. Here are some quick and easy things that will make your desk the hottest spot in the office.

Add Some Life to Your Desk

You might be the life of the office holiday party, but does your desk live up to that fun-loving reputation? Bringing a potted plant to your desk is an easy way to add some life to your workspace. It’s also a cool way to show the office that you’re a caring soul with a heart for nature.

Whether you go with a succulent, cactus, or something with leafy foliage, choose something that makes your heart happy. Just make sure it’s a hardy plant that can survive the weekends without water. If you don’t necessarily have a green thumb, an art print of a flower can work in a pinch too!

Spice Up Your Everyday Things

You wouldn’t believe how many not-boring versions of everyday work necessities are out there. From pens and pencils, to planners, and cute bags with inspirational prints, if you’re still using the plain versions, it’s time to upgrade. The simple act of bringing in your own funny coffee mug instead of using the boring ones in the break room adds a little sparkle to your day. Because that afternoon caffeine break tastes better in a cute mug.

Color Coordinate

The key to having a cute and fun desk that isn’t just a cluttered mess is color coordination. Be your own chaos coordinator and own your workspace’s color scheme. Whether that means throwing out all those boring pens in favor of lime green ones or just matching your desk accessories with your company’s brand colors, do it with purpose and you’ll love the results. It’ll add a fun and unique aesthetic that will make working more fun, and the rest of the office will be green (or purple, pink—whatever colors you chose) with envy.

Create a Work Zone and a Party Zone

If you struggle to maintain focus on Thursday afternoons, it might be because your space is a little too cluttered. Choose from a selection of colorful desk sets that matches your other stuff and get organized. Having a dedicated “get stuff done” portion of your desk and a dedicated “kickback and scroll social media while nobody’s looking” space can help you keep your mindset separated for work and party. But if work feels like a party, is that really a bad thing?

5 Old-Fashioned Skills Worth Learning

In the modern age, lots of skills and habits have fallen out of fashion. No longer do we need to figure out how to wash our clothes by hand or tie a horse to a stable (unless you work with horses). Heck, who even remembers how to send a fax anymore? Even with that in mind, some things never go out of style, and there are plenty of “old-fashioned” skills worth knowing and learning. Here are just a few that might come in handy.

Cursive Writing

Your grandma is right—cursive still has its place in the world. If you ever want to write a fancy letter or declaration, you’ll want to do it in cursive. There’s just something about those beautiful, hand-drawn loops that tell the reader that the message was crafted with effort and love. You don’t always have to use it, but if you’ve lost the skill since elementary school, it’s worth brushing up on it. Practice makes perfect, so unzip your cute pencil pouch, grab a jotter pen and get to scribbling!

The Art of Small Talk

Have you ever traveled with your parents and been amazed at how they can just strike up a conversation with a complete stranger? Meanwhile, we’re all doing our best to avoid eye contact and stay plugged into our headphones. While the days of conversation in the parlor might be fading, learning how to carry a conversation with anyone at any time isn’t a lost art. No matter how much you might hate it, this small skill is something you should practice and learn to master. You never know when it might come in handy.

Mending Your Clothes

Have you ever gotten rid of a pair of jeans or a shirt because a button popped off? It’s completely understandable but hemming and repairing your clothes can be a huge money saver in the long run, and it’s super easy to learn. With a minimal amount of skill with a needle and thread (threading the needle is the hardest part FYI), you can tackle a ton of little mending jobs and save your favorite clothes!

Navigating Without GPS

Let’s say you’re cruising around Dallas trying to find that one shop that sells the best funny coffee mugs but this time your phone is dead. How would you get there? While we likely always have GPS and turn-by-turn navigation, it’s handy to know how to get around without it—at least in your hometown. Learning to read a map can be daunting at first, but with a little practice, you’ll be zipping around town in no time.

Growing a Plant

Plants give us life, and those little green buddies can literally feed us. Growing fresh herbs in your windowsill, starting a garden, or just repotting a cactus is a valuable experience and a simple way to add life to your space. Watching something grow from a seed to a plant is rewarding and proves that you are a nurturing and caring person!

Cross Off Checklist Day or Any Busy Day with These Tips

It doesn’t matter if you’re a pro dog walker or a CEO, we all have a common enemy: the seemingly endless to-do list. Every day brings a new set of challenges and little things to get done. Some of us cross items off the list with ease while some of our today lists turn into tomorrow lists. If you’re going to get your entire checklist done in a day, you might as well make it October 30th, Checklist Day. If you missed that item on your list and the day has come and gone, it’s all good! Any day is a good day for checklist clearing. Here are some tips for tackling any to-do list, anytime, anywhere, any day of the week.

Start Off with a Win

Sometimes just getting started on the to-do list is the hardest part. You show up to work half-awake, fire up the computer, and immediately see a huge list of things to get done. It’s basically like staring up at a mountain. You gotta take the first step though, so why not do something easy? Getting that first little thing off the list will help start the momentum for the rest of the day.

Stop Multitasking

Yeah, yeah, you put on your resumé that you’re a multitasking rockstar, but sometimes that’s not the best approach. If you’re spreading yourself thin between answering emails, crunching numbers, and editing the company blog, you’re going to do a so-so job at each of them. Focus up and do one thing at a time as much as you can, so that you can get things done right the first time. The key to effectively tackling a lot of tasks is prioritization and planning, not trying to do 10 things at once.

Be Prepared

We only have so many hours in the day and spending a ton of time finding your laptop charger or that missing earbud is only going to slow you down. Show up prepared with all of your tools and gadgets in order. Pro tip: use organization buddies like pencil pouches to keep all of your little stuff together so you can stop chasing around headphones and lip gloss caps all day.

Clear Desk = Clear Mind = Clear To-Do List

It’s time to dispel the myth that a cluttered desk is the sign of a genius. In all honesty, it’s just an excuse we like to tell ourselves. If you really want to get some stuff done, you’ll love having a clean desk. It’s a lot easier than you think with desk sets that keep your office supplies neat and tidy. Pick one up in a vibrant color that stands out, and you’ll love your new productivity buddy.

In the End, Does It Have to Get Finished?

When it’s all said and done (or not), does it matter if everything is crossed off of the list? Most of the time, we put things on there that can wait, but the sight of seeing menial tasks leftover can make us feel unaccomplished. Only put priorities on the list, and when you check them all off, you’ll know you’ve earned that post-work happy hour.

How to Give Your Brain a Proper Break on the Weekend

Lots of people like to brag about how much they work, wearing their stress on their sleeves like a badge of honor. But life’s too short to spend all of your time thinking about work, and if you aren’t unplugging your brain and giving it a break on the weekend, you’re missing out. If you struggle to leave work at the door, here’s how you can take a much-needed brain break this weekend.

Get Outside and Look at Plants and Stuff

The concrete jungle is the result of innovation and productivity, but if you spend all day everyday inside, you’ll lose touch with Mother Nature. And while that succulent on your desk might help a bit, it can’t replace the experience of mindlessly wandering through a park or garden and taking in the plants, fresh air, and all that good stuff. Unplug your brain, pack a snack in one of your cute tote bags, and get outside. Your brain will thank you for it.

Find Your Zen

Maybe you’re already the master of chill and love to slip into those yoga pants and get stretchy. Good for you—seriously! For those of us whose minds are always buzzing, we need to first find our zen. Some like to go the meditation route and if you can find that focus, you should absolutely do it over the weekend. If you can’t sit still that long, do something else that requires no brainpower. Whether it’s organizing your growing collection of funny coffee mugs or going on a long walk, make an effort to unplug and find your zen this weekend. It could be tasks such as gardening, running, cleaning, yoga, or other activities that engage the body, just try a bunch to find what works for you!

Plan Time for Nothing

After a crazy workweek spent cooped up in the office, you’re probably more than ready for a jam-packed weekend full of non-work fun. Even if you want a day dedicated to nothing, you might feel pressured to use your free time to do something productive and fun. Why though? Schedule a few hours on a Sunday or Saturday morning to just do absolutely nothing. You’ve worked hard, and you deserve it.

What Job?

Unless you absolutely have to think about work and work stuff over the weekend—don’t. The to-do lists, upcoming projects, meetings, and awkward hallway encounters with your boss, just shove them to the back of your mind. The weekend is you time, and your main goal should be to forget you have a job and bills. You’ll know it’s working if you have to think for a second when someone asks, “What do you do for work?” Trust us, once Monday rolls around, you’ll feel mentally refreshed, almost like you put your brain on “chill mode” for a couple of days.

Just Because the Summer’s Over Doesn’t Mean the Fun Has to Stop

Summer is over! Chances are you’ve already put away your flippy floppies and sunnies in favor of flannels and ankle warmers. When we were kids, there was like no worse feeling than seeing back to school ads come on TV. It signaled the beginning of the end—the forlorn conclusion to the best time of the year and the beginning of school.

If you still have those thoughts about fall, remember that you’re grown up! For real. We’re adults now, and there isn’t a summer break. There is, however, a never-ending limit on the fun we can have. Our lives know no seasonal bound, so cheer up! Here are some of the super fun things you get to look forward to doing this fall.

It’s a Pumpkin Spice Kinda Life

Might as well get this one out of the way. For at least the last few years or so, pumpkin spice has been inescapable in the fall, and we’re not even mad about it. From pumpkin spice cookies, candles, pumpkins, and the legendary pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin spice is everywhere. Break out your best funny coffee mugs and get ready to sip on this not-even-really-pumpkin-tasting drink for months.

Enjoy Scary Movies Galore!

In the summer, we want to be carefree. Fall? Nope. Halloween is practically a month-long celebration for a bunch of us, and scary movies become a way of life. Everyone knows that December/January is Oscar season, summer is comedy season, and fall is for all of the horrible (in the best way) horror movies. Pro tip: use your cute pencil pouch to sneak snacks into the theater like the spooky smuggler you know you are. We won’t tell.

Go on Adventures and Get Lost

What’s better than a pumpkin patch? A good ol’ fashioned corn maze. There’s likely one somewhere around where you live you just might not know it. Some of us think we’re too old to be getting lost in a field, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Go out and get lost this fall and get bonus points if you can make it out without having to take a shortcut.

Football Is Back, Enjoy the Season

If you love football, you already know that you’re looking forward to it. Even if you aren’t a huge fan, you should skip the sports bar, go to a game in person, and turn it into an event. Whether you know your fumbles from incomplete passes or not, we can all agree stadium food is the best on a crisp fall evening. Regardless of which team you are cheering for, you’ll definitely be representing “Team Cute” when you show up to the tailgate with Talking Out of Turn can coolies and a super stylin’ cooler bag full of drinks for everyone.

Jump Into a Pile of Leaves

Fall brings amber and orange leaves that, well, fall. Although raking them up in a neat little pile is technically a chore, don’t fight your urge to jump in the leaves and make a Boomerang post about it. You know you want to, and nobody is stopping you. Leap away!

About Talking Out of Turn

We all need life essentials like pens, totes, stationery, pencil pouches, and baby cards for those surprise announcements. Talking Out of Turn (TOOT) has you covered! They put a fun lovin’ twist on these daily things that will make you the coolest busy bee in the office. They make most of their stuff in their Dallas workshop by hand, and you can tell they put their heart and soul into everything. Whether you want to add a splash of color to your desk or stand out on the weekend, check out their functional but sassy goodies.
